Diaper Bag for Twins: 7 Essentials to Pack (+ checklist)

Once you have twins, preparing to leave your house for any family trip becomes an athletic event.

Gone are the days you just grab your purse and keys and head out the door with a carefree grin on your face. Nowadays, you’ll have to grab both babies in their car seats, make sure the twin stroller is tucked away in the trunk and you can’t leave home without the all-encompassing diaper bag.

The diaper bag is a must have for parents on the road, whether you’re heading out for a quick errand or visiting friends for dinner with your babies. The question becomes, what in the world do you put in the diaper bag when you’re traveling with twins?

Fill your diaper bag with essentials that twins would use normally in a 4-6 hour timespan. This includes: bottles, diapers, wipes, change of clothing, bibs, burp cloths and pacifiers. Your diaper bag should be large enough to fit all of these items and have several pockets to make it easier to grab what you need without digging around too much while caring for twins.

In this article, I’ll share how to pack your twin diaper bag in under 10 minutes without missing any of the essentials for a quick trip.

Do I need two diaper bags for Twins?

You’ll only need a single diaper bag for twins, but you’ll need to pack that diaper bag with enough items to support two babies for the duration of your trip. Shorter trips would warrant less items while longer trips will require more.

Twin Diaper Bag Checklist 2022

Before we dive into why each item is needed, here’s a quick checklist you can reference for packing your diaper bag for twins for a quick 4-6 hour errand or visit with friends and family.

  • 8 Diapers
  • 1 Pack of Wipes
  • Changing Mat
  • 2 Pacifiers
  • 4 Bottles
  • 2 Outfits
  • 2 Bibs
  • 2 Burp Cloths
  • 2 Light blankets
  • 2 Toys
  • Winter: Socks & Hats

What to Pack in your Twin Diaper Bag?

Diapers & Wipes

Everybody poops, especially babies. There’s no telling when you’ll have to deal with a wet diaper so make sure you have enough diapers and wipes to change your baby every 2-3 hours.

Prepare yourself for the unexpected by taking more diapers than you need and a full pack of wipes, not travel size.

Assume that you’ll be out much longer than expected. Even if you only plan on visiting a friend for 3 hours, the conversation may be so great that you stick around longer to chat. You don’t want to have to rush home (or to the store) because you’re out of diapers and baby goes #2.

Diaper Changing Mat

A diaper changing mat is a washable pad that you can place on a flat surface (bed, table, chair, changing table, etc.) to ensure your baby’s bottom doesn’t come into direct contact with a friends furniture or a public surface. While out and about, you can place your mat on the surface and then place your baby on top to change their diaper. Then, you can fold up your changing mat and put it in your bag to wash when you get home.

The best diaper bags come with a changing mat inside the bag. Some diaper bags will even extend out to provide you with a changing area right inside your bag.

Pacifiers & Toys

If your baby is engaged by pacifiers or certain toys, it’s best to pack backups in your diaper bag. When spending time with friends and family, it’s always great if your twins can engage themselves for a while so you can actually enjoy yourself.

Bottles

Of course the kiddos will need to eat so make sure you pack plenty of bottles. This is especially important in the early days when new parents feed every 3 hours.

Pack one additional bottle for each child than you expect to need in your diaper bag. Prepare your bottle by adding the formula powder to the bottle only. Then carry bottled waters to add to the bottle later to ensure the formula doesn’t go bad while in transit.

Outfits, Bibs & Burp Cloths

Babies are notorious for making a mess at any time – not just while you’re out on the town.

Pack two additional outfits, bibs and burp cloths for each child in your diaper bag for any trip length to ensure you’re prepared for any spit up, slobber or diaper situation you may come across.

Light blankets

Carry additional light blankets at all times of the year because they have multipurpose uses including: swaddling a baby for a quick nap, using as a mat when laying your child on a surface to play, shielding baby’s eyes from the sun in the stroller on a warm day or covering your child on a chilly day.

The uses for a light blanket are endless so be sure to pack at least one per child in your twin diaper bag.

Winter Essentials: Socks & Hats

Pack two sets of hats and socks per child in your baby bag during the winter months.
